The technique

As mentioned earlier the technique presented here consists of three connected parts.

  1. The symbols are marked with colors in a way that can be translated to numbers, so called symbol-numbers.
  2. Each point on the board can be translated to a word, a so called coordinate-word, through an alphabetic coordinate system.
  3. A temporary or permanent memory-structure is used to associate the symbol-numbers with the coordinate-words.

When memorizing the placements of the symbols the coordinate-word of each symbol is put at a place in the memory-structure that corresponds to the number representation of the symbol. The memory-structure can for example be a story which you create in your imagination. Another, more powerful, structure that you can use requires some preparation. The structure consists of a walk through a familiar environment, such as the town where you live. This structure is created once and then used over and over again. You associate the coordinate-words with various numbered landmarks along this walk.

Color marking of symbol-numbers

The colors of the circumference and the center of each symbol gives the symbol-numbers according to the following system and examples.

 = 0      = 1      = 17      = 22
 = 23      = 40      = 45      = 74

Alphabetic coordinates

The positions on the board can be specified by coordinate-words through an alphabetic coordinate system.

Each square on the board is represented by coordinates consisting of two alternative consonants for the row and two alternative consonants for the column. Each square is then divided in six sections represented by the six vowels.

The brown and orange symbol above, representing the number 13, is in the A-section of the square located on the FP-row and the GR-column. The beginning of the coordinate-word for that position is formed by combining one consonant of the row, the vowel of the section, and one consonant of the column. In this case we can for example form the beginning "par" and make the word "park".

In the same way we can form "jet plane" for the position of the orange and violet symbol (symbol number 37).

So when we memorize the positions of these two symbols we put a "park" in position number 13 and a "jet plane" in position number 37 in our memory structure. Let's say your memory-structure is a walk through your town, and that location number 13 in that walk is the central station, then you imagine that they are building a park in front of the station. And let's say that location number 37 is the opera house, then you imagine that a jet plane is standing in front of it or crashed into it.

If you get for example the word "kar" you can treat it as "car" since "c" is not included in the coordinates. To allow more combinations you can use the rule that it is allowed to put a letter in front of the word, so if you were not satisfied with the word "park" you could as well use the word "spark", knowing that the "s" should be ignored when later on translating the word back to its alphabetic coordinates.
